Sugg Lighting – Continuing the Story of William Sugg & Co

Many of you will know that the original William Sugg company for which this website was developed was followed by a new company that eventually became Sugg Lighting. In due course and on retirement the business was sold to FW Thorpe who ran it for many years in Horsham before selling it on. This unsuccessful venture was eventually liquidated and a new company utilising the original name of William Sugg & Co was formed to carry on the historic lighting connection with the oldest name in the gas industry.

In retirement I have produced a history of the original business and now completed a further history of the business that was Sugg Lighting. This is in the form of a hard back A4 photobook printed by CEWE, the biggest european producer of these publications. It has 162 pages with 712 pictures covering the story from very small beginnings to a substantial specialist lighting manufacturer from reintroducing gas lights during the miners strike with the 3-day week to the new world of fabulous pubs suitable for the whole family and on to the rise and rise of the Shopping Centre where we built some remarkable traditional and super modern fixtures. The original Euro Disney used many special Sugg lamps and the ongoing business continued with some splendid projects.

It is possible to see the book online for some months using the link:

This type of book is printed one at a time and is expensive but it provides the real enthusiast with a unique story. I make no profit from the production of this book and am happy to arrange for it to be delivered direct from CEWE to your door. If you wish to obtain a copy please make contact with me and I will provide further information by email to ch***@*******************co.uk

Site Background & Header

The background to the site is a modern picture of Westminster, the ‘home’ of William Sugg for so many years. It was taken from the roof of The House of Lords during a visit by the Heritage Group of CIBSE in 2004 and centres on Westminster Abbey. The header carries a woodcut of ‘Vincent Works’, the Sugg factory, which might well have been visible from this vantage point. William used this on one of his letter heads. The first and oldest logo also shows the intimate connection with Westminster as it carries the Westminster portcullis with the inscription ‘en avant’ – ‘in advance’. The second logo replaced the earlier one around 1920 and was used right the way through the century until the ‘modern’ era when the ‘flame’ logo was applied to the new era of gas heating equipment with the new factory in Crawley.
